Waka Hourua

Te Toki Waka Hourua is committed to ensuring that the traditional knowledge and practices of ocean navigation remains alive, by sharing and celebrating these skills with the community, maintaining and sailing a fleet of training and voyaging waka, and training the next generation of navigators and crew.

Our Kaupapa

Te Toki Voyaging Trust was established over 30 years ago through the vision and leadership of tohunga waka, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr (Tainui). Hoturoa's whakapapa links him deeply to Kāwhia Moana, the ancient settlement of the Tainui people and Canoe. Since its inception, Te Toki Voyaging Trust has built a vast fleet of various sailing and paddling waka.

Te Toki is dedicated to the values of aroha, whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga. These values are the foundation on which we base our core practices.
